Sodium hydroxide, also known as soda lye, caustic soda or caustic soda (NaOH), is a strong, inorganic base with a crystalline structure and hygroscopic properties. It dissolves in water, forming a highly corrosive, colorless and odorless solution that is slippery to the touch and may cause burns. Due to its reactive properties, sodium hydroxide is widely used in industry, including in the production of detergents, soap, drain cleaners, water glass, rayon, rubber and in water treatment processes.
